One of the key roles any leader plays is finding ways to motivate your team to reach your organization’s goals. But the secret to motivating people is, wait for it …..that you can’t do it. I have studied this issue by talking to and working with thousands of people over many years and the one thing everyone can agree on is that you can’t motivate someone to do what they don’t want to do.
What you need to do instead is find out what people want and then show them how they can get it. Motivation is intrinsic. People get excited about pursuing a goal when it’s in their own self-interest. As a leader, the trick is to see if you can find an alignment between what your people want and what will help grow the organization. The upside is that if you can tap into the underlying desires people have, you will get amazing performances in return from them.

The best way to start your week is to take some time to anticipate the week ahead, and do what you can do to prepare for it. Even if it is just writing and queueing up emails to be sent first thing Monday, or thinking about how you want to approach a project in the coming week, it is time well spent to help a busy week go smoothly.
If you have a lot to accomplish this week, write it all down to make sure nothing slips through the cracks. Begin the list with your priorities and hardest deadlines, then refine to make it efficient. If you have a meeting in the same neighborhood as the dry cleaner, make sure to put that in your calendar so you can pick it up right after your meeting. Is the grocery store by your child’s school? Then swing by the grocery store before or after picking up your child. Being thoughtful with your schedule will make sure you get everything done when you need to, in the most efficient way possible.
